Common Questions about Teacher Recruitment Day
(From the Student Perspective)
What is Teacher Recruitment Day?
Teacher Recruitment Day is an opportunity for you to connect with school districts for teaching positions and/or gain outstanding experience in the interview process. School principals and other school administrators from public and private schools will be present. You must register with the career center associated with your college/university before the actual date of the event.
Who participates in this event?
The event is open to Fall 2010, Spring 2011, or Summer 2011 Education majors who have completed student teaching assignments. Students from Grace College, Huntington University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Manchester College, Taylor University (Upland), and the University of Saint Francis will be participating.
Where is the event held?
The event takes place at the Indiana Wesleyan University Fort Wayne Education Center off of I-69 at Exit 102. See the directions section of this website for details.
.
What is the format of Teacher Recruitment Day?
There are opportunities for you to interview one or more times in 25-minute appointments, a networking period of 30 minutes to distribute your resume to other schools with whom you do not get an opportunity to interview, and a bonus interview time that you could arrange at the end of the day. See the schedule section of this website for details.
What are the times of the event and what if I can’t be there all day?
Make every effort to be there all day! Interviews will be scheduled from 9 am – 3:30 pm. The more time you spend at the event the better the likelihood of obtaining more interviews.
How will I know if I have been granted any interviews?
The career center associated with your college/university will let you know who you have been granted interviews with at least one week prior to the event.
If I only got one interview, is it still worth my time to go?
Yes! Many students who only had one scheduled interview have been able to acquire more interviews just by being at the event. While this is not a guarantee, it has happened many times. There is also an opportunity for you to talk with school districts during the Networking Period from 11:45 - 12:15, and an opportunity to secure a Bonus Interview from 3:15 - 3:45.
How should I prepare for my interviews?
Dress professional. Wear your interviewing suit and polish your shoes. Minimize the use of cologne or perfume and jewelry. Spend a little extra time making sure that you are well groomed. The
career center associated with your college/university will provide a name tag for you upon your arrival at the event. Bring a few extra copies of your resume with you.
.
Spend time online learning more about the schools (i.e., what they emphasize, their philosophy, etc.) by reviewing their websites on the registered employers page. Typical interview questions can be obtained in the interview section of this website. Your career center can also offer you some interviewing advice or even a practice interview session by appointment.
How much does Teacher Recruitment Day cost?
The event is free to students. Lunch is on your own, however. So bring enough money for you to eat. Several restaurants are nearby--within 3-5 minutes by car.
What do I have to do to participate?
Review the specific instructions for your school in the getting registered section of this website. If you haven't started putting your resumé together or if it needs updating, then make an appointment soon with your career center. They'll be happy to assist you.
Can I get my resume included in the Resume CD?
Yes. Every employer will receive a Resume CD after the event. Contact the career center associated with your college/university for instructions on when to turn in your resume for inclusion in the CD. Our hope is that as opportunities continue to become available during the spring and summer, school districts will turn to this booklet and contact you for an interview.
Do I need to bring my portfolio?
If you have one, you may wish to bring it, but it is not required. Your interviews will only be 25-minutes in length. Generally, this is not enough time for a school district administrator to be reviewing your portfolio. First and foremost, administrators want to get to know you and have a professional dialogue with you.
I'm not very good at interviews, what should I do?
Review the interview section of this website for tips and contact the career center associated with your particular college/university to inquire about practice interviews.
